Ethereum is the second-largest cryptocurrency in terms of market capitalization. For many investors, the value of Ethereum on January 1 is a crucial piece of information, as this value is used when filing tax returns in The Netherlands. Let's look at Ethereum prices on Jan. 1 for the past few years, both in euros and dollars.

Tax on Ethereum

In most countries, including the Netherlands, investments in cryptocurrency are subject to taxes. Depending on a person's specific situation, corporate tax, income tax or wealth tax may apply to Ethereum assets.

Annual tax returns are based on the value of Ethereum on Jan. 1 of the previous year. So for example, when filing tax returns starting March 1, 2024, an investor must report the value of their Ethereum holdings on Jan. 1, 2023.

Prices can vary between trading platforms. Below, we use the data from an independent platform, CoinGecko, which uses a formula based on average prices from various public exchanges. The price was measured at 0:00 a.m. on Jan. 1.

Prices vary between exchanges

It is important to note that Ethereum prices on Jan. 1 may vary between different trading platforms. Different exchanges may have slight differences in price due to liquidity, trading volume, and other factors.

During the tax return, the Dutch tax authority asks that you report the value based on the exchange on which the crypto was bought. Also take into account any differences between the euro and dollar exchange rates.
