What is a Bitcoin wallet?

A Bitcoin wallet manages keys and signs transactions. Compare custody models and learn how to protect private keys and recovery information.
A Bitcoin wallet does not hold bitcoin in the way a physical wallet holds cash. Bitcoin remains recorded on the Bitcoin ledger. A wallet manages the information used to receive bitcoin and sign transactions.
The important question is not only which wallet you use. It is who controls the keys and the recovery process.
Keys, addresses and signing
A Bitcoin address is used to receive bitcoin. A private key is used to authorise spending. Wallet software can create addresses, manage keys and prepare transactions for signing.
Private keys must remain private. Anyone who obtains the relevant private key can potentially spend the associated bitcoin.
Recovery phrases and backups
Many modern wallets use a recovery phrase, also called a seed phrase or mnemonic. It can restore access to a wallet when a device is lost or replaced.
Treat this information as highly sensitive. Do not share it with anyone. A legitimate support contact should not ask for your recovery phrase or private key.
Custody models
Blockrise describes the Blockrise Wallet as semi-custodial. Read the current custody policy summary for the controlling public information. Product and Legal must approve any more specific key-control, recovery or withdrawal wording.
Wallet types are tools, not guarantees
Wallets can be mobile, desktop, hardware-based or managed through a service. The format does not remove the need for careful setup, a tested backup plan and a clear understanding of who controls access.
Paper wallets are often described as a wallet type. They are better understood as a legacy practice with material risks. Printed key material can be copied, damaged, lost or exposed without warning.
Choose a model you understand. Protect recovery information, and test your plan before relying on it.
